The Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of up to $1 million to assist Indonesia’s response to the outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease in livestock in Bali.

The funding will provide further vaccines and technical assistance to the Indonesian Government to help protect Indonesia’s livestock industries and reduce the risk of an incursion into Australia.

NTCA Chief Executive Officer Romy Carey said the announcement was an important and practical biosecurity measure.

“We welcome this announcement from the Federal Government,” Mrs Carey said.

“Lumpy Skin Disease remains one of the most serious biosecurity threats facing Australia’s cattle industry and supporting Indonesia’s response is in the interests of both countries.

“Indonesia is Australia’s largest live cattle export market and a critical partner for the Northern Territory pastoral industry.

“Strong biosecurity partnerships are essential to protecting producers, livestock industries and trade.”

Since 2022, the Australian Government has provided more than 1.4 million doses of Lumpy Skin Disease vaccine to Indonesia, along with laboratory support, disease surveillance and training.

Mrs Carey said Australia remained free from Lumpy Skin Disease, but its presence in the region remained a risk.

“An incursion of Lumpy Skin Disease in Australia would have devastating consequences for producers, exporters and regional communities,” Mrs Carey said.

“The strongest and most cost-effective biosecurity response is preventing diseases like Lumpy Skin Disease from reaching Australian shores in the first place.

“Supporting Indonesia to manage animal disease threats strengthens Australia’s own biosecurity defences.”

Mrs Carey said NTCA supported continued cooperation between the Australian Government, Indonesian authorities, exporters, producers and animal health agencies.

“This is a sensible investment in biosecurity and in the long-term strength of the live cattle trade,” Mrs Carey said.
