Markets

The Territory’s pastoral industry is almost 100% reliant upon domestic or international export of our cattle and beef. Because of this, the NTCA has, over the years, built a number of international engagement programs to support the ongoing development of our international markets and to support the growth of positive connections between producers and consumers.

The NTCA has, for more than a decade, run an exchange program with our counterparts in Indonesia where university students studying agriculture or agriculture related subjects are able to apply to come to Australia and experience working on remote cattle stations in the Northern Territory. This cornerstone program has been supported through the Indonesia-Australia Red Meat Partnership and has provided placement for more than 133 Indonesian students to come and form real relationships with those who produce the beef that they buy.

This program and our reliance on export market access underscores the importance of maintaining good lines of communication and relationships with our major trading partners. Equally it requires industry to be constantly vigilant of threats posed by disease and pest incursions that could devastate the industry.
